June 12, 2008
Dear Clients:
Due to rising costs the Board of EDI has approved an increase in the client co-pay to $13 for all calls (attendant, emergency transportation, and repair). The new co-pay of $13 will become effective July 1st, 2008. This is the first increase in five years. Raising the co-pay is the only way we can raise the wages for our staff. We hope this is not a hardship for any client.
You are encouraged to use green vouchers for transportation whenever possible. If it is a health emergency or your wheelchair is broken down, you will get priority if you request an emergency ride for the $13 co-pay, rather than requesting an On Demand Response with the green vouchers. Please remember that you can go wherever you want, within one mile of Berkeley, using the green vouchers. We can not accept vouchers which have expired, so please use them before the expiration date.
The increase in fuel costs have also caused us to request that when you ask our attendants to run errands you pay an additional fee of $1.50 per errand. The only exception is when the errand is within 2 blocks of your home.
Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
EDI administration

Emergency Wheelchair Transportation
We have a lift-equipped van to transport clients and/or wheelchairs, scooters and other adaptive equipment originating within Berkeley to a destination within a mile of Berkeley. A transportation ride is considered an emergency when a client is sick and needs to get home or to medical attention, or when a client has difficulties because of the weather, or when a client's wheelchair is broken. There is a $13.00 per ride charge for this service.
Emergency Wheelchair Repair
Minor wheelchair repair, including belts, batteries and tires, is available outside of the regular business hours of the local wheelchair repair shops. There is a $13.00 per hour charge for this service. Clients are expected to reimburse EDI for any parts they need to repair their equipment.
On Demand Transportation
EDI's new non-emergency, demand-response lift-equipped van service is available to clients, who are also clients of Berkeley Para Transit Services and utilize the city's Wheelchair-Van Program. Non-emergency, demand response rides are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am-midnight and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am-midnight. Rides can be scheduled up to two hours before they are needed. Non-emergency, demand-response rides cannot be scheduled the day before. All EDI rides must remain within one mile of the city of Berkeley. Demand-response rides can only be paid for with a GREEN van voucher purchased through Berkeley Para Transit. Emergency rides will still be $13.00 per ride. Please remember GREEN vouchers are the only accepted form of payment for demand-response rides. Please call the office for more information at (510) 845-5513.
