Our Share the Spirit Fundraiser with Bay Area News Group wraps up this month and it looks like we will be able to continue expanding upon our Repair Program thanks to your support. We have been blown away by the amount of donations the community has made to ensure Easy Does It can provide subsidized wheelchair repair services in Richmond and El Cerrito. Thank you so much for doing your part to make this a reality. There is still much work to be done to prepare our team to serve these new communities, we look forward to officially opening our doors to Richmond and El Cerrito residents in a few months.

Celebrating Black History Month

Infographic reading: African Americans and Labor, Black History Month.

As we celebrate Black History Month in 2025, we reflect on the significant contributions of African Americans to the labor movement. This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," highlights the resilience, strength, and determination of Black workers throughout history. From the fields of the South to the factories of the North, African Americans have played a crucial role in shaping the American labor landscape. This article also shines a light on the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans with disabilities, who have made remarkable contributions to the labor movement.

An Update regarding Backup Power Chairs

You all recently received an email from EDI regarding whether you needed a backup power wheelchair or scooter. Please note that EDI will not provide a backup wheelchair or scooter to any client that is currently restricted from receiving mobility equipment donations. The power wheelchairs or scooter donations that we receive often do not have new batteries and many do not have batteries at all. Therefore, EDI will provide a backup wheelchair or scooter ONLY if the client purchases new batteries for their back up power wheelchair or scooter. Please be aware that EDI is now able to purchase new MK batteries at almost 50% of cost for our clients.

Levan’s Wheelchair Repair Lift

Levan works on a power chair using his new second wheelchair repair lift, with his original lift in the background.

When Levan is not fixing power chairs, he is busy fixing the lack of equipment that exists to work on them. Most of the repair work that is done on a power chair requires access to the underbelly of the device, in the past, technicians would use a steel rod to lift the device up while someone else makes the repairs. Levan on the other hand installed a power chair’s seat lift mechanism in the center of our Repair Lift, which was originally meant to store Lawn Mowers in a garage. The result is a homemade but effective device that allows our repair team to effortlessly work on any part of a power chair. Now, he is exploring the possibility of a mobile seat lift mechanism that can be used on rescue calls.
